ALLAN THOMAS

Born in Suva, Fiji, as the second eldest of seven, Allan Thomas and his family migrated to Australia in 1969. Allan and his family settle in Parramatta, where they attended Parramatta Primary School and then later went to school at Arthur Phillip High School in Parramatta.

Allan later joined the Australian Defence Force in 1984, where he proudly served for 14 years. Most of Allan’s service in the Australian Defence Force was Peacetime service (service in Australia only), except for when he was deployed overseas to Sinai, Egypt in 1995-96 as part of the Australian Soldiers Contingent (ASC) 5.

On return from the Sinai, Allan was awarded with the Australian Service Medal (ASM) and the Sinai Clasp. He has also been awarded the Australian Defence Medal.

Now, Allan is an active member in the veterans’ community and currently holds the following portfolios within the Veterans community:

  • National President of the Australian Peacekeeper & Peacemaker Veterans’ Association (APPVA) Inc
  • Chair of the Working Group seeking a Royal Commission into the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in 2016
  • Training & Information Program (TIP) Chairman of NSW-ACT
  • Practicing Lay Advocate Level 4, representing veterans entitlements at the Veterans’ Review Board (VRB) and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT)
  • Chair of the Pension and Welfare Officer Network (PWON) meeting in Lismore
  • Representative on the Regional Consultative Forum conducted by the Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Services in Lismore

Allan also has one ministerial appointment as the National President of the APPVA, as one of the peak body Ex-Service Organisation (ESO) I represent on the Ex-Service Organisation Round Table (ESORT) Forum in Canberra which sits every four months to discuss issues pertaining to veterans of all ages and their families.

Allan currently lives on the Far North Coast of NSW with his family and is heavily involved as a Rugby Referee; and was appointed the President of the Far North Coast Rugby Referees Association in 2014 and still enjoys that role.

Allan has also represented the Far North Coast of NSW as a Country Referee at the highest level up until the end of 2015, where he focuses on passing on his skills to younger up-and-coming referees and acting as a rugby union referee coach both on the Far North Coast of NSW and at the NSW Country Championships in 2016.
